A COVERGENCE OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS
A research project on the effects of colonisation on ancient religion and indigenous peoples which manifested itself as a typographic expression. It focuses on Mexico and the Aztecs and Ireland and the Pagan Celts. I specifically wanted to look at syncretic religion, the blending of two or more religious belief systems into a new system eg. Mestizaje in Mexico. The result is a map/almanac which places elements of traditional maps i.e a key, ledger, scale alongside almanac data such as moon/ sun sets and rising times, representing ancients religions preoccupation with cosmology and our place within the universe. The map serves as a timeline from the beginning of the ancient religions Aztec and Pagan Celt; to the blending with Catholicism during colonisation; to present day examples of syncretism.
